Great way to begin the day…rather than sugary cereals, greasy biscuits, or just skipping breakfast altogether! Pure, yummy nutrition that tastes like ice cream…but no worries if you are trying to “lose” those extra pounds, from winter!  Starting your day with all the nutrients your body needs, with this filling smoothie will set you up for success…you won’t crave junk food, sodas, etc.  Contact me for more personal guidance, & tips!

Fruit Creamy Good Morning Shakes

(2 to 3 child’s or 2 adult servings)

Great for kids, & adult “kids” too! Children will LOVE the smooth texture, (no lumps!). The coconut milk contains lauric acid, which is antiviral, antifungal, & antimicrobial. This is another good food source for hiding nutritional supplements.

1 1/4 cups pure organic coconut milk
1/2 glass crushed ice
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds or chia seeds (I like Chia seeds, & I grind them first in my coffee bean grinder!)
1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
2 tablespoons grated organic raw unsweetened, unsulphured coconut

2 scoops of vanilla flavor “Love & Peas” certified vegan protein powder (adds 20 grams of protein!)  Order wholesale from me here: http://bit.ly/iOhks6

Add 1 sliced frozen banana (I like to freeze them…makes the consistency ice-creamy!!)
Add ½ cup or handful of blueberries (fresh or frozen), strawberries, mangos, fresh peeled oranges (YUMMM!) or other desired fruit available…!

1. Blend coconut milk, crushed ice, “Love & Peas” vegan protein powder, Chia seeds, coconut flakes in a blender. Add the fruit. Blend the mixture at high speed until smooth, creamy and thick (no lumps or pieces).

2. Pour into glasses; serve immediately. Sure way to start the morning off with BIG smiles! :)

The 3 W’s of Weight Loss

I am not a believer in “Diets”, although I may use the word on occasion only to refer to the food that we eat/consume.  I don’t believe in fad diets or the latest crash diet to hit the scene for losing weight. These are generally not only unhealthy, they can be dangerous. These diets are not “lifestyle changes” ,  so you end up with the “Yo-Yo” syndrome, gaining back more than you lost to begin with…can anyone relate?!  Creating new healthy habits is the key to lasting good health, maintaining your body’s optimum weight, preventing disease & slowing down the aging process.

I want to share with you today, 3 very simple, yet POWERFUL ways to begin a healthier new lifestyle, that will help you lose weight if needed, tone up your body, feel more energy & maintain optimal health & weight! 

  •  Water – Drink more of it! Your body NEEDS it! It flushes out the toxins that are stored in your fat cells, it hydrates your skin, so you look better, FEEL better & it is necessary! Often, your body is signaling “thirst” rather than hunger.  So, drink up!  Drink half of your body weight in ounces of pure water, each day. Tea, coffee & juice are fine, but are not water…so they don’t count!  The more pure water you drink, you’ll find the smaller portions of food you’ll need when you eat a meal or snack. Try drinking a glass of water within 30 minutes of your next meal! Ask me about how to find the BEST water at a fraction of the price of bottled!

 

  • Whole Foods – Yes, it’s really THAT simple! Just choose organic whole foods, instead of the processed, DEAD food, & fast foods that don’t feed your body any nutrition!  Dead foods & lack of pure water are a few of the reasons many people eat too much. There are other reasons, but I’ll save those for another post! The body needs to be nourished, but the processed food is just not delivering!  So, you stay on that merry-go-round of continuous eating, always feeling hungry & not quite satisfied.  There are many incredible smoothies, soups, & meals that can be made fresh, fast & simply in your kitchen that will jump start your health & fitness goals!  It is not a diet, it becomes your LIFESTYLE! Start slow if you need to, maybe by replacing just your breakfast with a smoothie, or a chia/quinoa breakfast cereal recipe (vanilla or chocolate, I’ve got recipes with many variations!)  Then, after a few days, add an additional raw vegan whole food meal into your day.  Soon, your body will crave those vitamins, live enzymes & nutrients!  Your taste buds will change, & fast food, sodas & junk will make you gag to even think about.   By integrating one or two meals to start out with, after an initial cleanse/detox (ask me how), you’ll be dropping the weight naturally…no hunger, no scale, no problem!

 

  • Walk – Simply make a commitment to walk for 30 minutes, briskly each day (get your heart rate up, bust a sweat….strolling does not count!!) Fresh air & sunshine will do wonders for your attitude, energy & health! The awesome part about this, is almost anyone can do it…make a daily habit of walking. Grab a friend, neighbor or your spouse & like Nike says, “just DO IT”!!  It’s convenient & FREE – there are no gym fees.  I do suggest getting a good treadmill, for those days that are rainy.  You can usually get an excellent condition used one, by looking in the classifieds in your area. That’s how I got mine, for $50 bucks.

Obesity in America

I was shocked when reading in the news a few weeks ago, about how a growing number of parents are actually getting gastric by-pass surgery for their obese children!  Can you believe that?!!  I know that the majority of medical doctors have been taught to prescribe drugs & perform surgery to treat the symptoms of disease, but these methods typically do not cure, heal or address the underlying cause of the problem.

Medical doctors regularly prescribe drugs, & often perform surgery for many illnesses that can be healed by a simple change of lifestyle habits (like eating REAL organic whole foods, instead of junk, drinking more pure water, instead of soda pop)  Obesity, diabetes type II, high blood pressure, acid reflux, high LDL cholesterol, even cancer & many other serious diseases can be treated, often healed & reversed by getting back to the basics of nutrition.

When eating a balanced natural, primarily whole food diet, you are getting LIVE enzymes, vitamins, minerals, proteins, healthy fats, phytonutrients…basically, everything our Creator meant for us to consume.

Simply by integrating more raw fruits, vegetables, legumes, & nuts into your daily diet, your body will naturally balance it’s PH & become more alkaline rather than acidic (an overly acidic body is the result of eating processed, dead foods with no nutritional value)  Disease cannot form or manifest in an alkaline environment. The big problem is that medical schools do not teach about nutrition, prevention & pro-active health care! They teach their medical students who become doctors & medical “professionals” to treat their patient’s health problems, illness & disease AFTER the fact, with drugs & surgery!  Additionally, the Standard American Diet or “SAD” as it is referred to, has been based on incorrect information from it’s inception. The Food Pyramid that the FDA & our country has been brain-washed to follow has been upside down for decades!  It’s no wonder we have a massive epidemic proportion of obesity (even in babies & children!), diabetes, asthma, ADHD, cancer, heart disease, stroke & more in the US.

At a typical visit to most doctor’s office, they are quick to whip out their handy prescription pads, & send you on your way home with a half dozen new drug prescriptions.  More often than not, their “continuing education” being the cute pharmaceutical rep that comes by to take them to lunch, & drop off samples of the latest new miracle drug.  Ever read the warnings that accompanies each prescription? Or better yet, research them? It’s VERY scary!  WE are the guinea pigs, the lab rats.

Some simple adjustments to what & how we eat, drink more water, & regular exercise would eliminate a majority of our health woes.

Wake up, parents! You can decide to make some fun, healthy changes that will bring new vibrance & energy to your family! By slowly merging (I use this term, because it doesn’t need to be “all or nothing”) fresh organic fruits & vegetables daily it’s easier to integrate and form new positive healthy habits into yours & your families lifestyle, by taking baby steps. You’re setting yourself up for success this way, because after about 3 weeks, you will FEEL & see the positive changes in your body! Ever wonder about the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It’s true! Our food, in it’s natural whole form, without being processed in a factory & converted to useless junk, should be providing us with what our body needs on a daily basis. If we don’t get these live enzymes & nutrients, our bodies begin to experience health problems; cellular damage occurs, we become overweight, and over time serious illness, disease & health issues may develop.

So, let’s get started! Begin by going through your cupboards, cabinets, refridgerator & freezer. Get rid of all the sugary cereal, bread, white rice,  processed food mixes, & other junk. Become a savvy label reader! Ever wonder what it is that you are really consuming? How about your kids? Do they start their day with sugary cereal out of a box…?  You will be surprised when you REALLY check those product labels. Fruity-Tootie Immune Booster Smoothie

My “Fruity-Tootie” Immune Booster Smoothie Recipe (You are gonna LOVE this delicious elixir!)

This fruit smoothie will soothe and heal sore throats, colds, flu, and coughs. It is my secret weapon! As a mom, I know first hand how Blended-Smoothiemuch we need our “super powers” to heal our families, right? Well, add this to your arsenal of healthy weapons! It’s packed with whole food vitamin sources, LIVE enzymes, and it will also cleanse, detoxify and boost the immune system. And when you’re feeling blue, it’s always a good idea to get plenty of rest!  Here is the recipe. You will need:

  • 8 oz. of pure water or coconut water
  • 3 peeled, seeded oranges
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 apple
  • 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup watermelon
  • 1 tablespoon of Organic Coconut Oil
  • 2 scoops of Certified Organic Vegan Vanilla LOVE AND PEAS Protein Powder.
  • Splash of pure, Organic Maple Syrup, Grade B (just a little!!! No more than a Tablespoon)
  • Raw, org. unsulfured Coconut Flakes (omit if you don’t have them, or if you don’t like them)

Put all ingredients in a good quality, high-speed blender. If you don’t have watermelon, add more mango or pineapple.

After all ingredients are blended and smooth, you can add 1/2 cup of ice cubes, if you like a more frozen drink.

The Fruity-Tootie Smoothie is great anytime, not just when you’re feeling something coming  on,  like a cold. But it’s a very good way to fight germs and other BAD GUYS! Enjoy! :-D

Donna’s Tomato Tortilla Soup

Donna’s Tomato Tortilla Soup

•    4 Servings
•    Prep 10 min
•    Cook 30 min
Ingredients:
•    2 tablespoons organic olive oil
•    2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
•    1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
•    1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
•    4 cups organic vegetable broth (I like the Trader Joe’s brand, personally)
•    5 or 6 fresh organic tomatoes or one 28-ounce can diced tomatoes, and juice
•    1 cup of fresh (sliced off the cob) or frozen organic sweet corn
•    1 cup of black beans (either canned, or dried & previously soaked o/n & cooked)
•    1 teaspoon ground cumin
•    1 teaspoon basil
•    1/2 teaspoon salt
•    Juice of 1/2 lime
•    2 tablespoons chopped fresh org. cilantro, or dried (I love cilantro, but you may want to start out with half this amount for your tastes)
•    1 organic avocado
•    Crispy Tortilla Strips
Directions:
1.    In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion and crushed red pepper and cook over medium heat until the onion is translucent, about 7 minutes. Add the vegetable broth and the tomatoes and their juice, bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
2.    Add the cumin, basil, salt, lime juice, corn, black beans and simmer for 2 minutes.
3.    Garnish with cilantro, tortilla strips, diced avocados, tomatoes, onions and serve.
*Variations: I also prefer using crispy tortilla strips or chips, broken up, sprinkled on top of the soup.

Chef Donna’s Superbowl Sunday Chili! You’ll Love It!

SUPERBOWL SUNDAY SPECIAL!!!


Donna’s (Pretty Close to) World Famous Vegan Chili
Chili Never Tasted So Good!

  • 16 oz. bag of dried beans, either 15 Bean Mix, or something close
  • 2 cups of Black Beans (if they are not included in dried bean mix)
  • 2  – 32 ozs. Of Trader Joe’s Organic Vegetable Broth
  • 1 Cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup red or yellow bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 Tablespoons organic extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 teaspoons organic ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon organic cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of organic honey, or maple syrup
  • 1 bunch Cilantro
  • 2 Fresh, chopped tomatoes or 2 cans TJ’s canned tomatoes
  • 1 bag frozen sweet corn
  • 1 package of Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo Vegan Gluten-Free “Sausage” (TVP – Textured Vegetable Protein)  *Shhhh, it’s our secret! NO one will know the difference…promise! *wink*!
  • Himilayan Salt & Pepper to taste

Soak all dried beans in a big soup pot overnight, with about 2 quarts of purified water, or at least for 8  hrs. After soaking, drain. Pour 4 cups of TJ’s Vegetable Broth inot pot with the beans.  In a separate pan, sauté onion, celery, carrot, pepper, basil & garlic in olive oil on medium heat for just a few minutes (not till soft).

Combine this with the rest of ingredients into the soup pot with the beans, add more vegetable broth as needed. Cook/simmer on low heat for about an hour to desired tenderness. Check the liquid level occasionally, when you stir your soup. Add more vegetable broth if necessary. Add salt & pepper to desired taste when finished.

Makes about 10 hearty servings.  Great for your SuperBowl Party!  Leftovers the next day are even better…!

This recipe is vegan, gluten-free, and soooo awesome!!! It’s been a HUGE hit at all of my parties & gatherings.  Even though the “sausage” is vegan, I can promise you…no one will be the wiser!  My son & Dad had no clue, when I served it to them. They both came back for seconds!

**If you don’t have time to soak the dry beans overnight, here’s the “Quicky Method”:
In a large saucepan, cover dried beans with triple their volume of cold water. Bring water to a boil, then lower heat & cook uncovered beans over moderate heat for 2 minutes.  Remove from heat & soak beans for 1 hour.

This will be a big hit for Superbowl Sunday! Enjoy! :-D

Chef Donna’s Sensuous Mocha Love Potion… Smoothie!

You don’t need to be a “Rawbie” to indulge in this Elixir of Love! This fabulous recipe is a wonderful way to share the LOVE with your sweetie for Valentine’s Day (or whenever)!

Not only is this a decadent, delicious treat, but it’s packed with superfoods and nutrients that are Natural Libido Enhancers! The flavor is rich and savory, sensuously chocolatey with a hint of coffee!

 

  • 16 ozs. of oconut milk or almond milk
  • 1/2 cup of goji sun-dried raw goji berries, soaked in ½ cup of pure water overnight (I use Navitas brand)
  • 1 banana, frozen (peel bananas when at their peak ripeness, slice & freeze in baggies or plastic containers) This will give an added “thickness” & natural sweetener to your smoothie!
  • 3 scoops of Vegan Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 2 tablespoons of Cacao Powder (Mayan Superfood!) Raw Chocolate Powder (I use Navitas)
  • 1 Tablespoon Maca Powder (Mayan Superfood!)
  • 1 packet of Organic Coffee or coffee flavor
  • **Optional ingredient (but I LOVE to add to mine)  Trader Joe’s Crunchy Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds (packed with Omega 3)

Start with the liquid, then the water-soaked Goji berries. Then add the dry ingredients/powders, then the frozen bananas, and blend with a high speed blender.

**Last, if you choose, add the Almond Butter and blend for another 2 minutes.

This recipe makes enough for 2 lovers, or just for you if you want to be stingy…teehee!! :-D Again, this is not only a wonderful treat that you will savor, (tastes like dessert!) it’s also a complete balanced meal in itself!  There are more vitamins, nutrients, minerals, iron, and more than 20 grams of vegan protein in each serving.  If energy is a problem, drink up and feel the blast from this yummy treat!! Enjoy!
